Mid-America Province Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Over the past few weeks the Chapters in Mid-America Province teamed up in support of the American Cancer Society.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is an event hosted by the American Cancer Society to raise awareness and funds to end breast cancer. The noncompetitive three- to five- mile walks unite nearly 300 communities as the largest network of breast cancer events in the nation. Making Strides is determined to finish the fight against breast cancer by helping people take steps to reduce their risk and find it early when it is most treatable. Funds raised enable the American Cancer Society to support groundbreaking breast cancer research as well as provides assistance for breast cancer patients.
Mid-America Province put their 99 hands together to fundraise for this great cause. The penny wars at the Fall Conclave promoted friendly competition among the chapters to raise the most funds for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5k. The chapters were challenged to make creative jars and collect as much change as possible. Epsilon Rho Chapter had the best design with their Haunted House Penny Jar while Epsilon Omega won the competition by collecting over $800 to support the American Cancer Society. The fundraising continued after Conclave with Mid-America Province raising almost $2000 between the Illinois and Missouri Making Strides Team Pages.
On top of providing support for this great cause the Brothers of Mid-America Province attended the Making Strides Walks in Chicago, IL and St. Louis, MO. Special shout out to Brothers Jessie Merlo, Matt Fiscella, Candy NG, Julie Do, Ina Liko, Prital Patel, Therese Quijano, Antonio Rodriguez, Hanna Lee, Ben Nagy, Elmor Pineda, Lauren Cunico, Patrice Davis, Adrian Maria Hollis, Anthony Valdes, Mark Abadines, Dan Dickson, Jasmine Syeda, Keith Riley Meg Olson, Brandon Webb, Michael Hildebrandt, CeCe Nguyen, Anna Gracheva, Brian Bergquist, Gerry Lagua, Genie Herrera, Dave Hoang, Ben Hung, Anmin Wang, Ridge Lin, Rachel Kapadia, Tuyen Pham, Kenneth Brian Capulong, Eric Saucedo, Connor Perkins, Jackie Nissen, Nick Kim, Carmen Stach, Dr. Anastasia Armbuster, and Becca Mousseau for coming out to the walk! Our New Philanthropy: Relay for Life/American Cancer Society

Dear Brothers,
On behalf of the Mid-America Province Philanthropy Committee, it is my honor to announce the new MAP Philanthropy cause: Relay for Life/American Cancer Society!

Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the US and accounts for 1 of every 4 deaths.  In 2015, about 589,430 Americans are expected to die of cancer, or about 1,620 people per day.  As Pharmacists and Kappa Psi Brothers, we strive to look beyond the statistics and pharmacological treatments to help improve the quality of life for our patients and their families.  One way we can accomplish this mission is to support the American Cancer Society in their fight against cancer.  The American Cancer Society provides research grants, raises public awareness about the importance of cancer screenings and prevention, and urges legislators to pass laws that support cancer research.

There are many ways that we can support the American Cancer Society.  Relay for Life is an overnight community fundraising walk which provides an opportunity for remembering those who lost their lives to cancer and honoring survivors and their families.  You can also support the American Cancer Society by increasing awareness at local schools or clinics.  For example, you could teach elementary school children about the importance of wearing sunscreen or counsel patients about smoking cessation at a local clinic.  I will be working with the MAP Philanthropy Committee to collect ideas to share with all chapters, but start thinking about how you would like to support this important cause!

Finally, I wish to thank the 2015-2016 MAP Philanthropy Committee for your hard work in researching potential philanthropy causes: Brothers Jessie Merlo, Summer Weiler, Emily Armgardt, Hanna Lee, Sarah Firmani, Morgan Beard, Hodan Mousse, Samantha Bryant, Nishan Sakadjian, Lauren Cunico, Ned Loy & Matt Fiscella!  I’m looking forward to continuing to work with you all this year!
PTBYB,
Rebecca Mousseau
